Y’know I reblogged this a bit ago and was saved from financial probation and getting kicked out of school because of it, just mere months from graduation. Did liberals collectively forget that Hilary won the popular vote the moment that fact stopped being rhetorically useful to them

"Look where sitting on your hands got us last election" what in the god damn fuck are you talking about

somethingaboutsomethingelse

"If you don't vote for Blue Team than that's a vote for the Red Team" oh, is that how it happened the last time?

therealklt

Yes, that's how it happened. It's because we don't go by the popular vote, we go by a little thing you might've heard called the electoral college.

Trump won Michigan by .3 percent, Wisconsin by 1 percent. Pennsylvania by 1.2 percent. Florida by 1.2 percent. North Carolina by 3.8 percent. And Arizona by 3.9 percent. That's a total of a paltry 491,719 votes. Just four hundred and ninety two thousand votes. And those are only the states that were razor thin in margin.

Yet over 100 million eligible voters didn't vote at all, and 5 million voters voted third party. That's 105 MILLION people who could have made the difference. 492k goes into 105 million 23 times. 492k goes into 5 million, the number of those who voted third party, 10 times. Ten god damn times. That's how many fucking people that is.

If just some of those states had gone to Clinton, she would have won. But they didn't, and it's because millions of people decided voting at all was too much trouble, or they decided that wasting their vote in a protest of ideology was more important than actual human lives.

It's really just that simple.

im-the-punk-who

Okay I wanna piggy back off of the previous reply to show y’all something real quick. I live in New York state, in The City(yes, that one). One of those ‘my vote will never matter because the state always goes blue!’ states.

Here’s the map of the results for New York state in the 2016 presidential election:

image

Now I know you’re thinking - holy shit balls that’s a lot of red!

And you’re fucking goddamn right it is! Trump had 36% of the vote in New York in 2016. For reference, although that’s about the percentage that usually goes to the republican candidate, here are the maps for 2008 and 2012 respectively:

image
image

Before I get into the main part of this post, wanna know WHY all those areas that were blue in 2008 and 2012 were suddenly red in 2016? In 2008 and 2012, Independents got less than 2% of the total votes. In 2016? Almost 6%. Not a big difference in the grand scheme, but this is a really great example of how even a small number can make a huge difference.

Now, see that teeny, tiny, area of dark blue down at the bottom? That’s New York City. New York City is literally the only reason New York State always goes blue. This ONE FUCKING CITY is the reason people are so sure that New York - which holds 29 electoral votes - will never, ever, go to a republican. And under normal circumstances, while that doesn’t make me comfortable, it does hold a certain amount of weight. It’s also why in the 2016 election I voted in my home county of Schoharie - one of those nice bright red areas up north.

Except here’s the thing about 2020. New York City is fucking empty.

24,000 people died of coronavirus in New York City alone this summer

An additional estimated 500,000 - no you are not reading that number wrong - have either moved out or been evicted. I work as a dog walker, and a full 60% of my client base has left the city and told me they are not planning to come back. They’ve left for places like Connecticut(7 electoral votes), or Massachusetts(11), or Vermont(3) or Florida or Texas or - you get my point. Now that they have been unemployed for six+ months, and the eviction freeze has been lifted, a shit ton of people are being forced to leave, and people with kids are also abandoning the city for somewhere less populated.

And even further? No one I know has received their requested mail-in ballots yet. No one. Not a single person. The virus is still active(and yeah, we’re down to <1% infection rate, but schools are about to open back up so :) ) Voting takes place in schools. it is likely many people will not be able to risk voting in person - especially if we see an uptick in cases as kids return. Which means if their mail in ballots don’t arrive in time, they may not be able to vote at all.

Hilary had around 4.5 million votes from New York - 2 million of those came from NYC and the surrounding boroughs. She won the popular vote in this state by 1.8 million votes.

Now, yes, a small number of the people who have left NYC are also Trump Voters. Something like 15% of NYC’s vote went to Trump. But a much higher percentage are democratic - and committedly democratic - votes. Healthcare workers suffered disproportionately from CV deaths. Startups, Small business owners, College and recent college grads, Theatre workers? They’re all gone.

New York State can, honestly, no longer be counted on to go blue no matter who abstains from voting or who votes third party because of the toll the virus has taken on the city. We really do need every single person who is able to vote, to do so. Not because it’s fun, or it makes you happy. Not because you believe 100% in the american democratic system. Because the people you - yes - you, the abstainers - have counted on to uphold your few, dwindling democratic freedoms, can no longer be counted on to do so alone.

Gerrymandering sucks. The electoral college needs to be abolished. But it is specifically because those things are still in place that you need to vote if you are able. We absolutely should be fighting the system. But we cannot abandon it to let it fall to ruin and leave the people affected by that fallout to die because of it while we gather our strength. And yes. People will die. If this summer has taught us anything, let it be that elections fucking matter and in the coming years, our leadership absolutely has the ability to determine how many of us survive.

TL;DR: If you have the ability to vote please fucking use it. This is not a normal election year, and the safeguards that have been in place are no longer to be relied upon.

We haven’t forgotten how 2016 went down - when we say vote it’s because we remember how much of a difference a very small number of people could have made, and we know that this year, that difference is even more important.

So you might have seen this image going around the internet.

[ID: A high school hallway crammed with shoulder-to-shoulder teenagers, about three of whom are wearing masks. End ID.]

This is a high school in my area. This was the first day back. This picture, taken by a student, went viral (ha), and the superintendent was more or less forced to make a statement. It’s long and it’s a lot of bullshit but here’s the big stupid part.

image

“One area where we have received a good deal of feedback is mask use in our schools. Wearing a mask is a personal choice and there is no practical way to enforce a mandate to wear them. What we will do is continue to strongly encourage all students and staff to wear masks.”

If I have to explain to you the staggering level of bullshit in this statement, then you’ve never been an AFAB person in high school. Tank top? Sent home. Jeans too tight? Home. Collarbones showing? Home. Never mind the application of out-of-school suspension, which is its own kind of bullshit that we’re not here to discuss today. If you can send someone home for showing too much ankle you can send them home for not wearing a mask.

I’ve seen pushback against him on Twitter but they’ve already proven they don’t give a shit what we think, or care about the safety of the students OR staff. Only that things look like they’ve gone back to normal.

So it’d be a real shame if people from all over blew up their phones at 770-443-8000 or used faxzero.com to send 5 free faxes per day to 770-443-8089 making known their concerns about this anti-response to a massive public health risk. Make it a national issue and maybe shame our government into acting like they’ve got a single brain cell between them. It’d just be real upsetting. I’m just saying.

HEY GUESS WHAT IT’S WORSE THAN THAT

image

“ Within days of that workout, several North Paulding [football] players had tested positive for the coronavirus. The school’s parents were notified just hours before the first day of class.”

image

“James’ parents saw the photograph that had been circulating Tuesday and told him, ‘You are not going back to school again,’ he said. But a few hours later, his mother had spoken to the school and was told that students who ‘chose not to go to school’ could face suspension or expulsion.“

image

Any student found criticizing the school on social media could face disciplinary consequences.”

This is a fraction of the article, please read the whole thing. I didn’t know about the expulsion threats - there was a literal three-day window to enroll for virtual. These kids are forced to choose between their health and their academic career. I can’t form words, I’m so fucking mad. Please don’t let them get away with this unscathed - Kemp either, this is his goddamn fault.

Thank y'all for blowing this up, please keep blowing it up, and if you could point people at this edition of the post I’d appreciate it. Not only is there more info but I fixed the really bad typo that was in the original post that took off.

riskpig

Please keep spreading this post. I work at a school in this district. The superintendent is a moron.

I got lucky that my school isn’t as bad as North Paulding High School, but it’s still not great. Kids on the waiting list for virtual learning are still being forced to come in person until “a space opens up for them.”

Our halls have arrows and signs, but the kids ignore them as kids are wont to do. The week before school opened, I was tasked to fill classrooms with 34 desks. THIRTY-FOUR. No one is social distancing, partly because no one is being given the option.

Every day, I go to work terrified. I have had panic attacks, knowing that these innocent kids that don’t have the emotional maturity to appreciate the gravity of the situation are going to get sick.

specialagentace

No, but you can misinform. You can with-hold information like the lag time it takes for ballots to get in. You can avoid posting any information at all about how to do mail-in voting. You can discourage it. You can smear campaign it. And you can make it very inconvenient.

Guys listen - REGISTER and CHECK YOUR REGISTRATION FREQUENTLY

Please note that Absentee and Mail-in Voting are being impacted by COVID 19. Go HERE to do some reading about Early and Absentee Voting.

Every state’s rulings/ regulations on Mail-in Voting are different. Check HERE for what’s happening in  YOUR state.

Some states are sending out absentee / mail in ballots automatically. MOST aren’t.  You need to be registered and you have to REQUEST one and the stipulations for requesting one are different for each state. So check yours for the requirements.

If you are voting by mail-in ballot please be aware that the deadlines for getting those votes in are BEFORE NOVEMBER!!

Don’t sleep on this. It’s coming up faster than you think and I can GUARANTEE YOU that the conservative right-wing pro-dumpster-fire people are going to do whatever it takes to get as many votes in as possible.

The opposition VASTLY outnumbers them, but that only matters if we DO SOMETHING.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO ALLOW TWO WEEKS TO MAIL IN YOUR BALLOT

I just read the line “President Donald Trump also indicated that federal squads would likely target cities run by the party that opposes him” in a real-life news article and I’m just thinking about how people really thought Democrats were overreacting in 2016 and that we should “give him a chance”

“Joe Biden and Donald Trump are the same” really? ?? What a galaxy brain take. Because right now the standard is “will address the pandemic and not send unidentified federal agents to kidnap citizens in the street” so, yeah, they’re not the same

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/jul/19/trump-joe-biden-coronavirus-polls

In an interview with Fox News Sunday recorded at the White House on Friday, Trump said “I’m not losing, because those are fake polls” and refused to say if he would accept the result if Biden won in November.

“I have to see,” Trump said. “I have to see. No, I’m not going to just say yes. I’m not going to say no, and I didn’t last time either.”

This is why you should vote, though.

Here’s the nightmare scenario: Biden could win by a very small margin - too close to call, like the 2000 election - and the conservative Supreme Court could get to decide that Trump is the winner, even if he loses the popular vote by a substantial margin (again).

Knowing that this is a possibility doesn’t mean we should give up. It’s actually an argument for getting out and voting, and encouraging every person you know to vote, especially if you live in or know anyone who lives in a swing state. If Biden wins by a landslide, it will be significantly harder for Trump to argue the results. Yes, he’ll stomp his feet and say it was rigged and spout conspiracies. But he will have lost, and it’s important that the rest of the world can clearly see that.

You know how the United States sometimes does that thing where we stand behind the democratically elected candidate in contested elections in other countries? Yeah. We’re that country now! So in the case that Biden wins decisively and Trump tries to contest the results, I fully expect other democratic leaders like Trudeau, Merkel, Macron, etc. to say loudly and clearly, “Congratulations, President Biden! We look forward to working with you!” This hits the global news, making it even harder for Trump to argue his case since it exposes him for what he is: A big giant baby throwing a temper tantrum. I also expect (lol) most (some) Republicans to do the responsible thing and back Biden in this scenario (shoutout Mitt Romney in advance). Is it going to be messy? Probably! But our best chance of getting him out of office is to vote him out now - waiting another four years will be disastrous, and who knows what elections will look like after another four years of voter suppression, gerrymandering, and Trump welcoming foreign interference? Let’s not find out.

Would I be surprised if Donald Trump went on Fox News and continued to insist that everyone there call him President Trump for the rest of his life? No. And the situation above isn’t the only nightmare scenario: It is highly likely that the 2020 election will drag on for days as mail-in ballots are being counted. But I don’t give a fuck what he does after he’s out of the White House - as long as he’s no longer in a position power. I will physically go there myself and stand outside screaming until he leaves if I have to, and I hope you will join me.

TL;DR Donald Trump will leave the White House one way or another. If the idea of 4 more years of Trump scares you, then let’s do everything we can to make sure he sees a decisive loss in 2020. We can’t afford to wait for 2024, when who knows how he will have abused his power and even fewer of us will have the chance to vote him out.

lynati

Vote to make his claim of victory less believable. Vote to make Trump lose by a truly embarrassing amount. Be one of the voices that said GET THE FUCK OUT, not one of the ones that stayed quiet. Vote so that you have the satisfaction of knowing you helped make him go apoplectic.

Vote, even if you expect to have to riot the following day because you think he's going to ignore the results.

Don't make it even one vote easier for him to claim his losing the election is Fake News.

View casting your vote for Biden as the easiest method of protesting against Trump and his blooming dictatorship that you can engage in, no matter what other styles of protesting you are involved with.

And if you're already planning to vote? Please be aware that you may well have to engage in some of those other forms of protest as well, in order to save our democracy.

You don't have to choose between voting and other forms of action. You can do both.

You SHOULD do both.

Self-Discipline Isn’t Always the Answer

ceebycee

So I wasn’t really taught to brush my teeth every day as a kid. So I didn’t. I got to be an adult and realized “hmm teeth are expensive I need to start brushing them” and brushing my teeth twice a day has been on my actual to do list every single day of my college career. It’s a habit I needed to build.

Have I successfully done it? Absolutely not. I’m pretty good about doing it at least once a day, but some days it just doesn’t happen. It’s not that I forget usually, I just had some aversion I couldn’t figure out, until last week.

I’m at the grocery store, in the toothpaste aisle with my roommate, and I complain about how much I hate mint. I FUCKING HATE THE TASTE OF MINT. The taste and the smell, any kind of minty thing in any form, I HATE IT. But literally every “adult” toothpaste in the aisle was some type of minty disgusting nonsense. And my roommate was like “you know you could like get kids’ toothpaste? You like bubblegum right?”

And y’all, it was like the clouds parted. I got some strawberry bubblegum kids’ toothpaste. I brushed my teeth with it and it was a whole new experience. I have successfully brushed twice a day every day since, because the mental block I had towards it is gone!

I thought my lack of brushing was just a moral failing on my part; I was too lazy, too undisciplined, to build a good habit. But really? I just hate the taste of mint so much I didn’t want to brush my teeth.

This made me realize that when presented with a change you want to make, a habit you want to build, if you’re encountering resistance in yourself, you should lean into that resistance and really investigate what’s causing it, then work on accommodating that.

Say you hate washing dishes so they pile up and then you’re overwhelmed by how many you have to do. Why do you hate it? Deep down, what about it do you dislike? Is touching wet food super gross for you? Try thick rubber gloves while you’re washing. Does the sound of dishing clanking together grate your nerves? Do them with headphones in and turned up loud. Do you hate the smell? Light some candles, spray some air freshener.

Do these things instead of gritting your teeth and forcing yourself, then ultimately failing and getting discouraged by your “lack of self-discipline”

TL;DR: When a task is consistently hard for you, relying on self-discipline, forcing yourself, and gritting through doesn’t always work. Lean in and listen to your discomfort, and find what makes the task hard, then try to accommodate that. Also, mint toothpaste is gross.

Watch: Poet Porsha Olayiwola heartbreakingly reminds us all that black women’s lives matter too.

amorphous-calcium-carbonate

“Men and boys are seen as the primary target of racial injustice,” AAPF associate director Rachel Gilmer told TakePart in May. “This has led to the idea that women and girls of color are not doing as bad, or that we’re not at risk at all.”

But studies show otherwise: Black women are killed and sexually assaulted by the police, and incarcerated at almost three times the rate of their white female counterparts. Yet news coverage of these cases are focused largely on the relationship between law enforcement and black men.

From the linked article above. None of this diminishes the importance of any Black Lives Matter protests or the lives of black men.

trump really rolled back healthcare protections for lgbt people during pride month AND on the day of the 4 year anniversary of the pulse nightclub shooting. i don’t know why i’m even shocked at this point but i still feel physically ill

kulluto-remade-deactivated20201

while this is going to affect lgbt people in general because we are now at risk of being charged higher premiums or fees for being lgbt or at risk of being completely denied healthcare for simply existing it’s especially going to affect trans men and trans women. i know there is a lot happening right now but please don’t let this go unnoticed. they are purposely passing these anti-lgbt laws right now because they know with the protests going on it’s an ideal time to do so. it’s an evil, underhanded tactic. don’t let them get away with keeping us in the dark about this.

jeffbezosasshole

Excerpt from the article:

In 2016, an Obama-era rule explained that protections regarding "sex" encompass those based on gender identity, which it defined as "male, female, neither, or a combination of male and female."

In June 2019, under Trump, the HHS Office for Civil Rights proposed a rule (the one finalized this week) that reverses the one from the Obama administration.

suddenlydaggers

from transequality.org

Am I still protected from health care discrimination?

Yes. No matter what the Trump Administration says or does, the Health Care Rights Law is the law of the land, and most courts have said it protects transgender people. Only Congress has the power to change the law by repealing the ACA.

In addition, many state laws prohibit discrimination in health care, and discrimination by the government violates the U.S. Constitution.

However, the Trump Administration’s actions will likely cause confusion for many patients, providers, and insurance companies, and it could lead to more anti-transgender discrimination.

What should I do if I face discrimination in health care?

If you have faced discrimination by a health care provider, insurance company, or another health program, reach out to an LGBT-friendly legal organization to get help exploring your options... Also, remember that many states have their own laws and regulations that protect transgender people from discrimination in health care and insurance coverage. If you face discrimination, you may be able to file a complaint with your state’s human rights agency or somewhere else—see our Know Your Rights resource for more information.

from them.us

Julianna S. Gonen, federal policy director for the National Center for Lesbian Rights, affirmed that the White House’s actions are “shameful” but stated that the Affordable Care Act’s “underlying guarantee of health care access free from discrimination remains in place.”

“While the federal government won’t help you, it also can’t stop you from going to court to secure your rights if that’s what it takes,” Gonen said in a press release.

Gonen is correct: The finalized rule on Section 1557 doesn’t change the fact that courts have consistently ruled on the side of LGBTQ+ access to healthcare, queer and trans people, who remain broadly protected from discrimination in almost half of U.S. states. 22 states have policies preventing bias on the basis of gender identity in areas like housing, education, employment, and public accommodations, and those protections are not impacted by the Trump administration’s rule.

A bevy of nationwide LGBTQ+ nonprofits, however, affirmed that they planned to sue to overturn the new regulations on Section 1557 — which means the policy could be tied up by legal injunctions for years.

I'll add that this is the latest in a long line of anti-trans and anti-lgbtq measures by the Trump admin (see: trans people in the military, bathroom bills, etc)

Some of the problems this is likely to create, as far as I can see, include

  • further limiting access to healthcare. Not only is it going to make getting a doctor harder, it'll make people less willing to seek out care in the first place
  • which is really bad news considering that trans folk, especially black (and other poc) trans folk are already more vulnerable
  • in a pandemic that's especially fucked up
  • yes, legal recourse is still an action, but the ruling seems likely to create even more legal confusion
  • not to mention people might not have the $$/resources to pursue lawsuits in the first place!

but it's not a total lost cause:

  • the proposed rollback of the Health Care Rights Law (HCRL/ACA secrion 1557) still hasn’t been approved by the Supreme Court
  • there is still state-level legislation
  • LTBTQ rights groups are planning to take legal action against the policy, so if you’re concerned about this the best option is likely to contact your local/national rights organisations and keep an eye on what they’re planning to do!

governments taking advantage of chaotic times and distraction to push legislation is a classic move. keep an eye on what's going on.
